In 1995, at the age of 14 Tony Hicks (pictured above left) shot and killed the son of Azim Khamisa (pictured above right) in a botched gang robbery and was sentenced to 25 years to life for the killing of Tariq Khamisa, a 20-year old aspiring university student.
Five years later, Azim visited Tony in prison and told him he had forgiven himfor the killing of his son and said he saw victims “on both sides of the gun”.
In 2019, Tony Hicks at the age of 39 was paroled from prison with the full support of Azim Khamisa, Tasreen Khamisa (Tariq’s sister) and the Khamisa family and began volunteering and serving as a Board member with the Tariq Khamisa Foundation a non-profit organization named in the memory of the young man he killed.
